 An Introduction to Polymers in Agriculture.

From scientific papers and general articles I have been able to find and read, the uses of polymers in agriculture, are growing in popularity.

Polymers are a class of versatile materials that have been used in many agricultural applications due to the ability to engineer application-specific polymers, depending on their uses, lifetime and economic viability. Different classes of polymers are being used extensively in agriculture today.  These consist of synthetic and organic polymers of which, 
Oasis™ 88 is a safe, organic, biodegradable, environmentally friendly soil enhancer.

There are many different types of polymers already used in agriculture and you are probably already using them, even if you are not aware of it.

Here are just a few examples…

1.     Slow release fertilisers and intelligent fertilisers.

2.     Super absorbents as soil conditioners to improve soil structure and water holding capacity.

3.     Biosorbents – Assists in the biosorption process, removal of heavy metal ions from water and soils.

4.     Assists with the biodegradation processes - breakdown of organic matter by microorganisms, such as soil bacteria and fungi.

5.     Improving water permeability and hydrolysis in the soil.

6.     Assisting with the release of unavailable plant nutrients in the soil.

7.     Helping to stimulate root growth and microbial activity.

8.     Leaching of Sodium from sodic soils and the list carries on...

The use of fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides (agrochemicals) are essential in agriculture, but these can potentially cause contamination to neighbouring ecosystems.  The development and use of agrochemicals in combination with polymeric materials can be an alternative to this problem in order to deliver agrochemicals into the soil to fulfil the nutritional needs of plants and reduce contamination to neighbouring ecosystems.

About Oasis™ 88.

  • Oasis™ 88 is classified as a Group 3 fertilizer-Soil Enhancer in SA.
  • Extensive trials are underway throughout SA at present by commercial and private farmers on over 70 different crops.
  • Oasis™ 88 has been tested in SA for the last 8 years and we are getting very exciting results at an application rate of 4 l/ha, depending on the crop and the soils.
  • Oasis™ 88 is a safe, organic, biodegradable, environmentally friendly soil enhancer which is PH neutral.
  • Oasis™ 88 has has a 3 to 4 month residual effect in the soil depending on weather conditions.  Being a carbon based, organic compound it is also consumed by soil bacteria.
  • Oasis™ 88 is based on organic chemistry specifially developed to help control soil salinity and alkalinity.  It has the same effect as gypsum (to leach soils) but is used in much lower quantities and does not add cations to the soil.
  • By applying Oasis™ 88 all locked up nutrients in irrigation water and soil become ionic (this means sodium can be leached out of the soil thus reducing salinity) It also aids in reducing soil alkalinity.
    Oasis™ 88 dissolves the “fixed’’ Calcium Carbonate, Calcium Phosphate and Gypsum so as to release Ca2+ PO₄ ³- and SO₄ ²- ions and keep them free to be drawn up by the plant roots.  Calcium, Magnesium and Phosphorous are also freed and are available for plant uptake.
    Vapour loss of nitrogen (Volatilization) is reduced and there is an optimization of the fertilizer consumption.
    Efficient cell plasma uptake of water and nutrients is significantly improved which increaseases water infiltration rate into the soil, therefore less runoff and increases water mobility through the soil profile.
    All this equals increased plant growth, stronger root systems which leads to improved soil structure and microbial activity, and healthier plants (Stronger disease resistance) culminating in better germination, greater production and higher yields.

  • Oasis™ 88 is compatible with most herbicides, fungicides, pesticides and liquid fertilisers therefore no extra application costs.  It also acts as a wetting agent (cost saving here too) and it keeps your spray application equipment and irrigation equipment free of inorganic scale and deposits.
  • Our best results from our trials have been combined with good, solid, sensible farming practices with regular soil and leaf sampling.  Based on these sample results we will be able to advise you on the best way forward to achieve optimum results, using a multi-pronged fertilising and liming program in conjunction with Oasis™ 88.
  • Oasis™ 88 is not a one stop miracle fix (“Snake Juice”) but rather, a new product on the market which should be given serious consideration as one of your tools to achieving better quality and productivity.  For example, if you only applied L.A.N. to your crops you will achieve a response but not the same response as you would if you followed a scientifically recommended fertilisation program using all possible macro and micro nutrients.  Now combine this with Oasis™ 88 and you will now have a winning formula.  (Applying more than the recommended rate does not produce better results and is not recommended.)
  • Oasis Micro Nutrients
    Micro Nutrients are normally available only in a powder form, making it difficult to apply.  Oasis-Agri are now blending and granulating the powders, which can now be applied either on their own or included in our fertilizer prescription blends.

Questions from Farmers & Answers

  1. What is the recommended application rate for short term crops such as Sugarcane, Maize, Wheat, Vegetables, Pasture, etc. ?
    4 litres per hectare after harvesting sugarcane or after planting other crops, once per year.
  2. What is the recommended application rate for trees such as Macs, Avos, Forestry, etc. ?
    4 litres per hectare 4 times per year (Every three months)
  3. How is Oasis™ 88 delivered to my farm?
    It is a liquid and is delivered in 21 litre plastic drums. (25kg each)
  4. What is the cost of a 21 litre drum?
    R 3,150.00 plus VAT.  or R 150.00 per litre plus VAT.  Oasis 88 is not zero rated for VAT as it is not classified as a chemical or a fertiliser therefore VAT is payable on this product.
  5. Can I mix Oasis™ 88 with my other herbicides to reduce applications costs?
    YES you may.   Oasis™ 88 is compatible with all herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, liquid fertilisers and acts as a wetting agent too.
  6. Does Oasis™ 88 cause soil mining?
    So far through our extensive trials using soil sampling as one of our tools we have had no indication of soil mining.
  7. Does Oasis™ 88 have a residual effect in the soil?
    Yes it has a 3 to 4 month residual effect as it is a carbon based polymer it is also consumed by soil bacteria.
  8. Why have I not heard of Oasis™ 88 before?
     Oasis™ 88, although it has been tested in agriculture over the last 8 years in SA, is a very new and exciting agricultural product with lots of potential.
  9. Are there any farmers in SA who are using Oasis™ 88?
    Yes, there are plenty! :-)
  10. Where can I find scientific data on Oasis™ 88 Polymer?
    Due to this product being so new to SA and the fact that many active trials are still in progress there is very little scientific data but it’s coming.  Our advice is don’t be left behind and start your own trial today with the help of our Soil Specialists.
  11. Does Oasis™ 88 work on acid soils PH 3.6 - 4.2? (KZN North Coast)
    Yes it does.  With acidic soils it is common practice to apply lime (CaCO₃) or dolomitic lime which also has Magnesium.  By applying CaCO₃ it reacts with Hydrogen in the soil shedding an oxygen atom to produce H₂O and CO₂ and releasing the Calcium which is now available to the plants.  By removing the Hydrogen ions in the soil solution, we increase the PH level, which in turn makes some of the macro and micro nutrients more available to the plants, as can be seen on tables showing the effect of PH on plant nutrient availability.  By using  Oasis™ 88  in conjunction with lime, it helps to make even more macro and micro nutrients available to the plants by weakening the bonds between the anions and cations in the soil.  This process happens irrespective of the PH level in the soil.
    ***My first trial on this exact type of soil is already showing good results (22% increase compared to control) and after only 4 weeks with less than 10mm of rain since application!
